Preserving Our History

Cherokee Indians, early 19th century settlers, cotton plantations, and railroad connections all played major roles in the unfolding drama of Duluth's rich history and culture.

Following are a few important dates in the Duluth chronicle:

1821	Evan Howell first settles area
1833	Area christened Howell's Cross Roads.
1876	Town receives charter, the fourth oldest chartered city in Gwinnett County.
1906	City of Duluth officially incorporates.
1922	Duluth elects Georgia’s first woman mayor, Mrs. Alice Strickland.
1943	Duluth built the first hospital in Gwinnett County
